We are Listening and Taking Action

An Important Message from our CEO

Dear Girl Scout Members and Families,

As I begin my journey as the new leader of this great organization, I want to share how we will work to make Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona an even better place.

At Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona, it is our commitment to listen, understand, and continue to build an organization that elevates diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice as organizational prioritiesWe acknowledge that Girl Scouts has not always been viewed as a welcoming organization for every girl, nor an ideal place to work.  One thing we know to be true – our past does not reflect our future and we have work to do.  We are committed to creating an open culture where everyone succeeds and we are not shying away from making this organization welcoming to all. This is very important work and we will be accountable to the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Furthermore, I would like to share our next steps to ensure this work and the changes we implement are sustainable.

1. We are listening to girls.  We must begin with their voice.  We will be launching a virtual forum next week where we will invite our Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors to share their thoughts and experiences and how they would like Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona to take action.  There will soon be a platform to hear from our Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors as well.

2. We will be working with coaches and experts in the field of inclusion and equity to provide our staff and volunteers education, training, and tools to best foster a healthy environment and better serve our girls and community.

3. We will diversify our representation.  It is important that our staff, board, and membership reflect the community that we serve and that all girls see themselves in our Girl Scouts membership.  In full transparency, we are not there yet.  It will take time and thoughtful attention to achieve this goal, but the work begins now.

4. We are committed to taking action.  As a national movement, we are officially launching Girl Scouts’ anti-racism pledge. We encourage all Girl Scouts—girls, families, volunteers, alums, and staff—along with all of our supporters, to sign the pledge and commit to taking action to make the world a just and equitable place.

Please know that this is only the beginning.  Something I have always loved about Girl Scouts is how beautiful and powerful it is to see our girls learn and grow. We will follow our girls lead and discover, connect, and take action, all to make our organization, community, and world a better place!

I would like to hear and learn from you and your girl on what your hope and vision is for Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona. There will be future opportunities to connect, but until then, please know that I am always available to you at (520) 319-3172 or khernandez@girlscoutssoaz.org

Together we will do better, and be better.

Girl Scout Strong,

Kristen Garcia-Hernandez, Chief Executive Officer
