TUCSON- Girl Scouts has teamed up with the Southern Arizona Susan G. Komen Foundation to bring Scouting for the Cure to Southern Arizona! On November 3rd girls and their families will go pink to spread awareness about breast health through fun and educational activities such as creating survivor pillows, making reminder bead necklaces, decorating bookmarks, breast health bingo, and more!
This is Scouting for the Cure’s first year in Tucson. The event was created by North Carolina’s Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council by a Troop leader and her sister, both breast cancer survivors. Councils across the
nation have since added the program to their offerings as the cause holds special significance for Scouts across the nation. Girl Scouts Founder, Juliette Gordon, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1923 and later died from the disease in 1927.
Coco Horner, Girl Scouts Health and Wellness Specialist, is excited to bring this important program to girls in Southern Arizona. “Healthy living is an integral part of our work. Girl Scout troops have been participating in breast-cancer awareness activities such as Race for the Cure, for some time now. After hearing about the program, we decided why not gather everyone together on the same day and collectively work to raise awareness and to make a difference.” Horner also notes the idea garnered such a positive response that the event will also be taking place on Saturday in Graham County.
Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona invites girls and their mothers to don pink and join them for Scouting for the Cure.
