Tough Cookies Cycling Team

We have one goal, to get girls on bikes. Whether you want to ride for fun or train to ride 40 miles of El Tour de Tucson, we offer events to engage all ages of girls.

Volunteer Needs:

We are looking for volunteers who are comfortable riding a road bike. The volunteers will be assisting with team practices, escorting the girls as they ride. The volunteers need to have their own bike, helmet and other necessary equipment. We would especially love women volunteers who are interested in mentoring individual riders through on-your-own weekly rides. Come help spread the joy of riding!

What is the Training Team about?

This is an 11 week program that trains girls to ride in the 40 mile 2011 El Tour de Tucson. The girl will attend practice 3 times a week to learn bike skills, as well as her from guest speakers and attend clinics on all aspects of healthy living. The girls will get to experience the cycling Tucson has to offer, as well as obtaining the knowledge the girls need to keep riding!

Who can participate?

All girls 10-18 are invited to ride with us. Younger girls may participate if they can pass a bike skills test. The only limiting factor should be interest; through generous grants we can offer scholarships and equipment for girls who cannot afford it. The only real requirement to train with us is enthusiasm about cycling!

How will the training work?

The training team will meet 3 days a week; Monday and Wednesdays from 6-7pm, and Saturdays 9am-11am (Times may change with weather and daylight). Coaches and volunteers will be present at all the practices. In order to maintain the fitness and team spirit needed to complete El Tour, we ask that girls attend at least 70% of practices to ride with us.

How do I get involved?

The training team interest meeting will be held 6pm August 16th at the Resource Center. Please RSVP to the interest meeting by emailing Kat Salthouse at ksalthouse@sahuarogsc.org If you can’t make the meeting please contact Kat Salthouse or Briana Nute for more information. Practices will start the week of August 29th.
