24 hour chat to celebrate International Women’s Day

World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is celebrating International Women’ s day by organizing 24h Chat. It will take place from 10.00GMT 8th March to 10.00GMT 9th March.

24 hour chat

Crossing eight time zones, eight young women will moderate discussions on education for girls, violence against girls and young women, decent job opportunities for young women, female leadership and girls’ and young women’s participation in development of the pos-2015 agenda.

We will include your ideas and suggestions resulting from the chat in the International Day of the Girl Action Plan – our call to governments, businesses, institutions, civil society and individuals to help create “The world we want for girls”.

From India to the United Kingdom in 24 hours!

The International Day of the Girl   (IDG) Ambassadors will “pass the torch” to each other after a three hour session devoted to the most important elements identified by girls in the World we Want for Girls campaign. During each session you will have a chance to learn about the key facts on the theme, bring your perspective, share your experience and offer your solutions and recommendations, as well as listen to other experts and guest speakers. Your suggestions and recommendations will further

tereotypes, cultural norms and traditions, legislation and practice.

The IDG Action Plan already includes results collected through “The world we want for girls” campaign. Overwhelmingly, people wanted to see a stop to violence and a start for equality. They wanted a world where girls were no longer discriminated against, and were instead respected and had access to education and opportunities to make decisions about their own lives. Over 50 per cent of respondents said that it was sometimes or often challenging to be a girl where they lived. It doesn’t have to be this way.

On International Day of the Girl on 11 October 2012 we started the conversation.  International Women’s Day on 8 of March is an excellent opportunity to continue the debate and draw the world’s attention to girls’ rights as human rights.

We want to hear your voice, support you to take action and connect you to other people doing the same all around the world. Your contributions will create a powerful tool, a call to action we can all use to influence and engage with people to make sure the world we want for girls becomes a reality.

We will use the IDG Action Plan to approach funders to support our programmes, talk to governments about prioritizing and investing in girls, work with partners to deliver holistic solutions to the issues girls are facing, develop more programmes and support more projects done by girls for girls.

Your voice counts – so join the conversation and invite your friends along too!

How to join the conversation:

On the day, head over to www.wagggsworld.org/en/chat, you will see a message that says ‘click here to join the conversation’, click and log in via Facebook, Twitter, Rumble talk or as a guest. Then simply type and chat!

Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona partner with TEP to distribute CFL's

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

We've received an amazing donation of 100,000 Compact Florescent Light Bulbs from Tucson Electric Power to distribute throughout our Cookie Sale this year as thank you gifts to our community. Working together, TEP and Girl Scouts will save the community over $500,000 in energy savings and eliminate 57,749,471 pounds of CO2 from the environment! WOW!

  • Girls will be receiving their CFL bulbs at buy viagra online our Cookie Drop on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 2 Tucson locations.
  • The Girl Scouts Cookie Sale

starts on Saturday, January 19, 2013.

As part of the partnership, TEP has developed an instructional video for girls that teaches them why we should use CFL bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs, and why this is such an amazing opportunity for them to be able to “Do A World of Good” during their Cookie Sale. Watch the videos in both English and Spanish below. (Hover over the video and click int he right hand bottom corner to view it full screen)

Girl Scouts will also be distributing the CFL Bulbs at many other community events this year:

In addition to distributing the bulbs during the cookie sale and at community events, Girl Scout Juniors will be distributing bulbs at the their schools as part of a unique educational opportunity made possible by our Girl Scouts Forever Green initiative and the Alcoa Foundation. Juniors (4th & 5th graders) will use the Get Moving! curriculum and focus on studying the difference between light bulbs, building materials, and insulation in order to conduct an energy audit at their schools. The girls will then come up with a plan to Take Action and share the information they learned with the faculty and student body at their school. Once they find a way to present the information, students will be able to take home a bulb to start Taking Action in their homes. If you would like to schedule this opportunity for your troop or your school, please contact Kristi Pallack at kpallack@girlscoutssoaz.org.

We are extremely grateful to Tucson Electric Power for this amazing opportunity to be able to have such a great impact on our community. Beyond saving over $500,000 in energy savings, check out these incredible statistics from our Girl Scouts Forever Green impact report:

  • kWh of energy saved (lifetime): 37,620,915
  • Pounds of CO2 eliminated (lifetime): 57,749,471
  • CO2 emission from X cars (annual): 5,136
  • CO2 from planting X acres of trees (annual): 5,581

Hunger Hits Home: an 11 year old perspective

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

written by Lucy S., age 11

Hunger is a bigger problem than I thought. I thought only people who were poor or didn’t have homes where hungry. I was wrong. Many other people are suffering hunger. A lot of kids who are hungry aren’t getting enough healthy food. That is a problem. If the smaller/younger kids aren’t getting the nutrition they need, they could develop heart problems, diabetes, and even high blood pressure.

These kids need food, their parents too. People all over the world, over 11 million kids aren’t getting breakfast everyday. 1 out of every 5 kids don’t get breakfast every day. Many of their parents don’t have enough food, or just can’t afford it. They either receive food stamps or go to local food banks.  Schools are starting to give away free breakfasts to kids in need. This changes their whole day. Breakfast keeps you concentrated.

My friend told me today that she didn’t eat because she “didn’t want to”. I think that she missing out by not eating. When you don’t eat breakfast, you wont be able to stay focused or alert during school. If you aren’t focused or alert, you wont be able to do your school work. That can effect your grade.

We must stop this. By 2015, the President of the United States of America wants hunger to end. The smallest donation to a food bank could change a 5-year-old girl’s life. We need you to help.  Take the pledge today at http://nokidhungry.org/learn-about-campaign

Zoe’s Geo Party- video clues and more!

Friday, October 7th, 2011

I’m Zoe Bentley, and I have been a Girl Scout for more than ten years at the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council. I have created a Jeopardy! style trivia game called Zoe’s Geo Party!, which consists of video clues given by me which I film all over the USA. Each video clue is the answer to a question, like in the game of Jeopardy!, and the correct response to each clue is in the form of a question. It is a goal of mine to work for Jeopardy! on their Clue Crew filming clues like these around the world, and to work for NASA as an exogeologist. Zoe’s Geo Party! is my latest creation for my Exogeology ROCKS! website. Exogeology is the geology of other planets. Exogeology ROCKS! won second place in the 2010 No Boundaries contest and was a Girl Scout project. The latest series of Zoe’s Geo Party! video clues is a five clue long category about the Girl Scouts of the USA, which is a very important subject to me. These clues cover the basics of being a Girl Scout, but it was a challenge deciding what to put in them because there’s just so much to do as a Girl Scout!

I’ve made a lot of great memories with Girl Scouts, including earning badges, planning themed meetings, and writing a collaborative novel with my troop titled “The Epic Story of Me” due to be published November 2011. I’d love to hear about some of your favorite Scouting memories!

Write them and your response to these clues on my Exogeology ROCKS!

Special thanks go to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, and to my family and fellow Girl Scouts for helping me make these clues.

Doodle 4 Google + Girl Scouts = Awesome!

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

From the Girl Scouts of the USA Blog, posted January 19, 2011

Today, I’m extremely excited to announce the partnership of Girl Scouts of the USA with the fourth annual Doodle 4 Google contest. Open to K-12 students in the U.S.,Doodle 4 Google is an opportunity of a lifetime: design the Google.com homepage doodle for millions of people to see, and while you’re at it, take home a $15,000 scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for your school or your Girl Scout troop/council. This is the first time that Google is opening up their annual art and design contest to After School Programs, and the Girl Scouts of the USA is one of their premier pilot partners. In the spirit of thinking big, the theme this year is “What I’d like to do someday…” – giving all of the talented young dreamers an opportunity to flex their creative muscles.  Read the whole story here.

This is a Test!
