Focus on Self-Esteem

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

The problem of low self-esteem is pervasive among pre-adolescent and adolescent girls in the United States. Research conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute and other organizations demonstrates that risky behavior such as smoking, drinking, unsafe sexual behavior, eating disorders, suicidal tendencies, and self-mutilative behavior are often associated with low self-esteem. Here are some ideas to help raise self-esteem in your community and peers:

  1. Cover Girl Culture Screening: Hold a screening for your community and then facilitate a discussion about how we can combat negative media and rally for positive media images for girls. Create posters or a PSA with your ideas to fight against negative media for girls.
  2. Operational Beautiful: The mission of Operation Beautiful is to post anonymous notes in public places for other women and girls to find. The point is that WE ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL. You are enough… just the way you are! Visit the Operation Beautiful website for ideas on how to spread the message!

Focus on the Elderly and Special Abilities

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Seniors in Southern Arizona have supported us our whole lives and its time to support them! Offer a helping hand to one of your neighbors who may need assistance.  Here are some great options to give back:

  1. Yard Work: This can include gardening, mowing the lawn, or sipping tea in the front yard.
  2. Help at Home: This can include, organizing, reading, taking out the trash or even cooking a meal.
  3. Nursing Home Buddies: Take a field trip to a nearby Assisted Living Home and play games, sing songs and have a jolly good time. If any of your new friends were Girl Scouts, take a moment to talk to them about what it was like!
  4. Donate Helpful Items: Collect no slip socks, colorful decorations, games, adult diapers, etc. and donate them to an elderly neighbor or assisted living center.
  5. Build Wheelchair Ramps: Plan and build wheelchair ramps for those in need! Arrange to have them installed at businesses or homes around town.

Zoe’s Geo Party- video clues and more!

Friday, October 7th, 2011

I’m Zoe Bentley, and I have been a Girl Scout for more than ten years at the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council. I have created a Jeopardy! style trivia game called Zoe’s Geo Party!, which consists of video clues given by me which I film all over the USA. Each video clue is the answer to a question, like in the game of Jeopardy!, and the correct response to each clue is in the form of a question. It is a goal of mine to work for Jeopardy! on their Clue Crew filming clues like these around the world, and to work for NASA as an exogeologist. Zoe’s Geo Party! is my latest creation for my Exogeology ROCKS! website. Exogeology is the geology of other planets. Exogeology ROCKS! won second place in the 2010 No Boundaries contest and was a Girl Scout project. The latest series of Zoe’s Geo Party! video clues is a five clue long category about the Girl Scouts of the USA, which is a very important subject to me. These clues cover the basics of being a Girl Scout, but it was a challenge deciding what to put in them because there’s just so much to do as a Girl Scout!

I’ve made a lot of great memories with Girl Scouts, including earning badges, planning themed meetings, and writing a collaborative novel with my troop titled “The Epic Story of Me” due to be published November 2011. I’d love to hear about some of your favorite Scouting memories!

Write them and your response to these clues on my Exogeology ROCKS!

Special thanks go to the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, and to my family and fellow Girl Scouts for helping me make these clues.

Girl Scouts Work on Capitol Hill

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Girl Scouts of the USA continues to be the thought leader for all girls, especially through our advocacy efforts in critical girl-focused issues like body image and maintaining familial connection while a parent is in prison. In particular, GSUSA has been instrumental in spearheading two recent pieces of legislation recently introduced inWashington.

Last month, Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), along with teen Girl Scouts, the founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis, and former FCC Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate introduced the Healthy Media for Youth Act (H.R. 2513/S. 1354). This legislation would establish competitive grants for media literacy program, facilitate research on how messages about girls and woman impact youth, and create a National Taskforce on Women and Girls in the Media that will identify voluntary steps that the public and private sectors can take to promote healthy media images of girls and women for the benefit of all youth.

The Families Beyond Bars Act (HR 2464) was introduced in the House of Representatives in July by Congressman Bobby Rush (D-IL). This bill is modeled closely after the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program that facilitates child-parent visitation programs for children with incarcerated parents. If enacted, this Act will allow Girl Scouts Councils who participate in GSBB, such as the Sahuaro Council, to better fund and serve existing GSBB troops. Currently, the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona work in conjunction with the Southern Arizona Correctional Release Center to preserve mutually affirming relationships between incarcerated mothers and their daughters. For many girls and their mothers, Girl Scouts Beyond Bars is the only avenue they have for addressing their unique family needs in a way that honors and supports familial ties.

We need your help to build support for these bills.

Speak up and let your voice be heard.

Our Board Member Chris Elliott & Walgreens have graciously offered to let girls set up shop in any Walgreens in our jurisdiction. They will pick 10 items that are needed for the fires and girls will be able to sell that am cost in the stores. Then, they will ship everything right to where its needed for us! If your girls are interested in helping with this, please send an email or FB message to Kristi Pallack (kpallack@sahuarogsc.org) with how many girls you have, which Walgreens location you would like to set up at, and what days/times you are available. Girls that participate will also receive a special patch!

Girls Take Action in Midst of Fire & Evacuations

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Our girls in Sierra Vista are hard at work this week rounding up donations for both firefighters battling the fire and community members forced to evacuate their homes. Troop 662 has been volunteering at the evacuation shelters and Troop 1770 donated $150 worth of their cookie money to the collection efforts.

Items in need are: baby wipes, chapstick, sunscreen, water, gatorade, bandanas, ziplock bags, eye drops/wash and energy/protein bars for the Evacuation Shelters & Firemen in Sierra Vista. In addition, they are also collecting headache medicine, boot laces and plastic eating utensils.

Also on Friday, we had some staff changes happen at the office! Congratulations to Niki Hoffman, our new Customer Experience Manager; Karyn Synnestvedt, our new Retail Manager; and Kristi Pallack, our new Mission to Market Coordinator!

Saturday was a BIG day in Girl Scout land! In Yuma, Juniors got to enjoy a two hour horseback riding lesson at the Rocking Horse Farm! They learned to groom their horse, take care of their tack and then got to learn how to ride. Thanks Jonica for organizing such an awesome event!

If you were in Tucson on Saturday, you must have been busy! We had three amazing events for you to choose from! We started the day off at 10am at the Resource Center with Eatza Pizza where 40 Daisies and Brownies gathered to learn about what makes a pizza a pizza! They planted herb gardens to use on their own pizzas at home and built solar ovens to cook pizzas for a pizza party!

Also at 10am, we kicked off our 2nd Annual GreenFest- Presented by Bookmans at the Tucson Village Farm! Over 1,000 Southern Arizonans came out for this FREE, family event showcasing over 40 local, sustainable organizations. We had a farmer’s market, a green living exhibit, a recycled art show, live music on the solar powered stage and even an electric car show! We had over 30 Girl Scouts show up to volunteer at the event and even more bring their families to walk around. We made worm bins, challenged you with a recycle relay and had a solar robot demonstration! On Saturday afternoon, the Flandrau Science Center hosted Brownies and Juniors for an afternoon of Insect Discovery! Girls learned about insects, why we need them and how they aren’t as gross as you may think! Insect Discovery is happening every Saturday in April so if you want to get in on the bug fun- contact Michelle for more info!

Well, that’s it for this week! Make sure you consult our Program Calendar for what’s coming up this week!
