Mt Lemmon/Whispering Pines Closures

Monday, June 6th, 2011

For Immediate Release
June 6, 2011

Girl Scout of Southern Arizona – Sahuaro has been informed that the US Forest Service along with the Pima County Board of Supervisors has decided to close the Coronado National Forest beginning noon on June 9, 2011 until the Forest Service determines that there is sufficient rainfall to minimize the risk of fire. “Girl Scout, troop camps, Mom and me and resident camps scheduled for Whispering Pines Program Center will be cancelled for the month of June.” said Debbie Rich, CEO. “We will work closely with the Forest Service to determine when it is safe to reopen Whispering Pines Program Center. It is our hope to reschedule camps that were slated for June in July assuming that we will regain access to the property the first week in July.”

Sahuaro Girl Scout Council is committed to the safety of girls and the sound stewardship of our properties and supports the Forest Service decision to close the forest. If registered girls cannot attend camp in the month of July please contact the Council for a full refund. Refund requests can be made to refund@sahuarogsc.org or on our website at www.girlscoutssoaz.org/refund or by calling 520-319-3163.

SGSC will provide updates on our website as they become available.

Rain Smell

Friday, February 18th, 2011

by Ariane Mohr-Felsen

I ran in the desert this morning and the whole time felt as if I couldn’t breathe deeply enough. The desert smelled of rain to come and with each inhalation I tried to take in as much of that smell–that feeling–as I could. I tried to make out what I was smelling: a bit of creosote, some moist mesquite, maybe desert broom too? I couldn’t pinpoint it, but I think that is part of the magic of smelling rain in the desert–it is so infrequent and so elusive and so unique that it reminds us of how lucky we are to get the rain at all. And for me, I was reminded of how lucky I am to be able to step out into this Sonoran Desert–a desert with tropical roots and one of the youngest biomes on the North American continent–and just take it all in, marveling at how such a wide array of plants and animals eke life out of less than 15 inches of rain a year.

Something about the billowing clouds, the sporadic spots of sunshine, and the illuminated Tucson mountains off in the distance all made me think the last time I was in northern Arizona. Last fall I was up on the second Hopi Mesa, speaking with a teenage boy about his life there. The smell of rain was in the air then too, but it was different: we were in a different desert and the rain smell was accented with hints of different plants. He told me about how his culture believed that rain was brought by Kachinas–Hopi spirits–from the San Francisco Peaks, where I had been earlier that day. I remembered the clouds building over the peaks and pictured them trailing behind us, waiting to rain down upon the Hopi Mesas. The boy said they could definitely use the rain, and that a Kachina ceremony was being planned for that evening.

I and my group continued along our way, ending our day at the Grand Canyon. The next afternoon the rain arrived too, and I smiled, imagining the Hopi boy and his Kachina ceremony.

I definitely hope that we do not get the same kind of rain on our San Francisco Peaks Expedition this upcoming summer as we got last fall. I don’t think we will–the amount of rain that northern Arizona received was highly unusual. That being said, I am SO stoked for our expedition, no matter the weather. We’ll be prepared with all of the right gear regardless, and just dreaming of days spent backpacking and night spent telling stories around a campfire or snuggled up in our sleeping bags makes my heart happy :) I can’t wait to get to know some new girls on the trip and discover a whole new part of AZ together.

Off to write that gear packing list now ;) …..

U.S. Surgeon General Advocates Outdoor Play (click the link to read the full article)

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – January 28, 2010

Key actions outlined in The Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation include:

Individual Healthy Choices and Healthy Home Environments – Change starts with the individual choices Americans make each day for themselves, their families and those around them. To help achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle, Americans of all ages should: reduce consumption of sodas and juices with added sugars; eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins; drink more water and choose low-fat or non-fat dairy products; limit television time to no more than 2 hours per day; and be more physically active.

Creating Healthy Child Care Settings – It is estimated that over 12 million children ages 0–6 years receive some form of child care on a regular basis from someone other than their parents. Child care programs should identify and implement approaches that reflect expert recommendations on physical activity, screen time limitations, good nutrition, and healthy sleep practices. Parents should talk with their child care providers about changes to promote their children’s health.

Creating Healthy Schools – Each school day provides multiple opportunities for students to learn about health and practice healthy behaviors such as regular physical activity and good nutrition. To help students develop life-long healthy habits, schools should provide appealing healthy food options including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, water and low-fat or non-fat beverages. School systems should also require daily physical education for students allowing 150 minutes per week for elementary schools and 225 minutes per week for secondary schools.

Creating Healthy Work Sites – The majority of the 140 million men and women who are employed in the United States spend a significant amount of time each week at their work site. Because obesity reduces worker productivity and increases health care costs, employers are becoming more aware of the need to help promote health within the workplace. Employers can implement wellness programs that promote healthy eating in cafeterias, encourage physical activity through group classes and stairwell programs and create incentives for employees to participate.

Mobilizing the Medical Community – Doctors and other health care providers are often the most trusted source of health information and are powerful role models for healthy lifestyle habits. Medical care providers must make it a priority to teach their patients about the importance of good health. When discussing patients’ Body Mass Index (BMI), providers should explain the connection between BMI and increased risk for disease and, when appropriate, refer patients to resources that will help them meet their physical, nutritional, and psychological needs.

Improving Our Communities – Americans need to live and work in environments that help them practice healthy behaviors. Neighborhoods and communities should become actively involved in creating healthier environments. Communities should consider the geographic availability of their supermarkets, improving residents’ access to outdoor recreational facilities, limiting advertisements of less healthy foods and beverages, building and enhancing infrastructures to support more walking and bicycling, and improving the safety of neighborhoods to facilitate outdoor physical activity.
