It’s in the Bag! Girl Scouts and Bashas Building a Greener Community

January 12, 2012

100,000+ bags collected and on their way to Food City

Tucson- Every year Americans go through about 100 million plastic bags. That’s approximately 360 bags a year for every man, woman, and child in this country. Once used, these bags last for up to 1,000 years. This means every single piece of plastic ever manufactured is still on the planet. After being used for your groceries, it goes into our landfills, exists as wind-blown litter in our land, and creates toxic contaminants in our water.

The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona want to make a difference in this area and are on a quest to reduce the amount of plastic used in the community. The Girl Scouts are in the 100th year of their mission to educate families, schools, and communities on how to improve the environment and protect natural resources

Through their 100th Anniversary Girl Scouts Forever Green Project girls have been out in the community for the past four months collecting plastic bags in an effort to reduce plastic in unwanted places. To date, over 100,000 plastic bags have been collected and brought to the Girl Scouts main office in Tucson. On Thursday Girl Scouts Mission to Market Coordinator, Kristi Pallack, delivered the truckload of bags to the 3030 East Broadway Food City who has partnered with Girl Scouts in this green initiative.  Pallack couldn’t have been happier by the results, “Not only did this project raise girls’ awareness on environmental sustainability, the girls thought outside the box and came up with tons of creative ideas for reuse including dog leashes, parachutes for action figures, stuffing for pet beds, baskets, and handbags.”

Bashas Family of Stores, including Food City, Bashas and AJ’s Fine Foods, will all be accepting plastic bags and keeping a tally on all bags received.  Bashas recycles 160,000 pounds of plastic bags every year, so partnering with the environmentally friendly company is a natural fit for the Girl Scouts.  The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona invite the public to join in this effort to reduce plastic bag waste. Simply bring your bags to any of these Bashas family stores and deposit them in the specified containers.

It’s a New Year and a perfect time to resolve to take small steps. Together we can create a greener Arizona!

Who’s the GREENEST of them all?

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Kristen Culliney, our Director of Mission to Market, is! To honor all her hard work and her devotion to not only leading a healthier life, but teaching girls how to lead healthier lives- we’ve nominated her for Mrs. Green’s “Who’s the GREENEST of them all?” Contest honoring the bestest and greenest in our community! Here’s what Super Kristi had to say about Kristen:

“Kristen is surely the Greenest of them all, both at work and in her personal life! At work, Kristen organizes and supports outdoor and environmental programming- teaching girls to respect and love nature, garden and even raise chickens as part of an urban agriculture series. She promotes recycling and composting around the workplace and even bikes to work! She coined the phrase “No Girl Left Inside” and supports curriculum that enables girls to become environmental stewards while going on the adventure of a lifetime. At home, she has sworn off television in order to develop healthy relationships, raise chickens with her family and spend more time in the outdoors running, biking and hiking with her kids. She is one of the lead organizers of GreenFest Tucson and is an advocate for shopping, eating and playing local. Kristen is a believer in reducing, reusing and recycling and lives her beliefs everyday. There’s no green-washing this lady! She’s totally green!!” Click here to vote for Kristen as the GREENEST of them all!

Visit Mrs. Green’s Website to vote for Kristen or nominate someone who you may think is the Greenest of them all! Are there any Green Girls out there who deserve some recognition? I bet there are!!

Thanks to all of our Girl Scouts who came out to help and to our Disney Give a Day Get a Day volunteers for all their hard work! You guys all rock! Here are some pictures from this weekend!

Kick Butts Day

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

On March 24, the 15th annual Kick Butts Day, hundreds of youth in every state and around the world will STAND OUTSPEAK UP … and SEIZE CONTROL AGAINST BIG TOBACCO.

Kick Butts Day (KBD) is a national day of advocacy that empowers youth to speak up and take action against tobacco use through hundreds of events from coast to coast. Last year, we celebrated KBD with over 1,000 events across the country. Now we need your help to make KBD 2010 better than ever.

This year, KBD is going to concentrate on the three important public health initiatives:

  1. Fully-funded state tobacco prevention and cessation programs.
  2. Higher state tobacco taxes.
  3. 100% smoke-free workplaces and public places.

Fact sheets on each of the three initiatives are available for advocates to download on the new policy corner section of our website, www.kickbuttsday.org. We’ve also loaded up our KBD website with activity ideas to help you plan an event.

Once you’ve chosen a KBD activity, registering your event is quick and easy! And after an event is registered, our KBD Media Team can help your event attract media attention.

So what are you waiting for? Will the Girl Scouts in your state join hundreds of youth advocates nationwide in standing out, speaking up, and seizing control against Big Tobacco on March 24, 2010?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

We do! With our new Cookies on Demand program girls have cookies with them starting from Day 1 of the sale! This means we are lowering our carbon footprint by reducing trips to each customer and reducing the paperwork involved in taking pre-orders! And, did you know that you can recycle almost all of the cookie packaging? You can recycle everything but the plastic cookie sleeve! Proceeds from the cookie sale will help girls Take Action and continue to “Green” our community! For more information about the cookie sale or to find some Girl Scout cookies near you, visit ilovegirlscoutcookies.org! Happy Eating!
