Teams that Volunteer Together, Stay Together

By Kristi Pallack

Our volunteer staff teamed up this week to volunteer at the Emerge Center for Domestic Abuse Holiday House. Megan, Emily, and Ellen knew they could volunteer anywhere during the holiday season but really wanted to volunteer with an organization that supports women.

The ladies got to help set up each “shop”: one for moms to shop for their kids, and another for kids to shop for their moms. When the women and children came into the shop, our volunteer team helped show them around, pick out gifts, and then helped wrap them. Emily remembered “one of the ladies who came in and picked out a crockpot. She was so excited about it! She said that when she was able to get back on her feet, she was going to use it all the time and it would make her home warm and smell good.”

Volunteering together was a great way for our team to remember the small things that make a really big impact when you volunteer, like a woman thanking them for being there. Emily thinks that must be how troop leaders feel when then get a big hug from a girl!

Favorite part of their time there? Emily says it was fun to play Santa. They got to go around to all the rooms and deliver the gifts to everyone. One lady didn’t speak English, but got so excited when they put her gifts under the mini Christmas tree she had in her room.

The Emerge! Holiday House is a donation-driven event that is set up like a retail store. It allows current participants to select gifts for their family in a safe environment. With the help of supporters like you, they are able to provide holiday gifts to the women and children in their programs. Last year 70 volunteers assisted more than 400 participants shop and wrap gifts.

Holiday House is in progress, but there are still some items that are needed. If you would like to donate to Holiday House please call 520-795-8001 for more information.
