A Special Message from the Chief

It is only July, and it has already been a whirlwind year! We have had another fabulous cookie season, celebrated our 100th anniversary, kicked off the Year of the Girl campaign with Chief Girl Scout, Anna Maria Chavez, and are now in the midst of another Girl Scout favorite- summer camp. All of our success thus far would not have been possible without you and your active involvement in our Movement. Everyday we are amazed by the work of our Leaders and volunteers.  You care about our mission and do everything you can to ensure our girls have the courage, confidence, and character they need to go after their dreams and to change the world.

As a Leader you are able to see first hand the difference you are making in girls’ lives. Please think about your experiences from this past year. Do you remember how you felt when you heard one of your girls stand up for another or displayed an act of kindness to a person in need? Do you remember how you felt seeing your troop set and work toward their goals? What about when they took over the activity unexpectedly and turned it into a girl-led experience?  These are the moments that show what you are doing really matters.

As the new Girl Scout membership year approaches, we hope you will join us once again as a Troop Leader and continue to help girls reach their full potential. As a leader, role model, and mentor you are helping girls use their unique talents to become the type of leaders they want to be. We not only want girls to be their best selves, but we want to pave the way for girls to be the future leaders in business, in government, and in all facets of society. I cannot thank you enough for the hours of service you have already put into this effort and for all those to come.

While girls are the face of our organization, volunteers make up the heart of Girl Scouting. We are firmly committed to ensuring that our volunteers are not only engaged in the Movement but are able to volunteer in meaningful ways unique to an individual’s interests and pursuits.  As a result, we have revitalized our volunteer structure in order to make the system more responsive to you and your needs. Our new GO Team model is flexible, multi-functional, and efficient. GO Team volunteers will be able to partner with Council staff members in a specialized area of support and tackle anything from events and series to outdoor adventures and cookies.   GO Team opportunities include Social Media, Travel, and Take Action Coordinators, New Volunteer Coach, and Community Champion among others.

All of our awesome GO Team volunteer opportunities can be found at: GirlScoutsSoAz.org/GO/. As you will see, the opportunities for adults are just as diverse as those we have for our girls! We encourage you to apply for any and all positions that may interest you. Volunteers who submit a GO Team application by July 30th will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a Nook as a sign of our appreciation for your continued commitment. We know that change is rarely easy and that many of you have questions about this new structure. To help answer any questions and to alleviate lingering concerns you may have, we will also be hosting GO Team Volunteer Fairs this summer throughout Southern Arizona where you will have the chance to sit down with your potential Council staff partner. We held our first fair on June 26th in Tucson and will be coming soon to your community!

Thank you once again for your role in changing girls’ lives.  As a volunteer you have a front row seat to watch the future change. The next Girl Scout you meet might just be the next President or CEO. Please join us again in the upcoming year as a Leader and don’t forget the additional opportunities that exist through the GO Team! I hope you join me and help us ToGetHerThere.

Yours in Girl Scouting,
