At our weekly Wednesday night Adelante Jovencitas meeting in the Bookman’s Low Lounge, we experimented with engineering. We gave the girls four pieces of paper, four pieces of masking tape, one piece of duct tape and one clothes pin. Their task was to create a structure taller than a drinking glass which could hold a heavy binder. One girl, Trina, far surpassed the single binder. Her structure was strong enough to hold two binders and 36 books! Her design was made out of four single tubes of paper which were taped to the table but not connected in any other way. Although Trina’s structure held an amazing amount of books, the other girls built structures to hold at least two binders as well. So, overall the girls were all successful and not only did they have a ton of fun, they learned about engineering too!
