This year on Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) we’re inviting Girl Scouts to participate in an urban garden installation extravaganza. Here at the Resource Center on Columbus and Broadway we have an enclosed parking lot…it is a perfect spot to create an urban gardening demo and resource garden. There is much work to be done and a lot of problem solving to figure out (hello! we’re trying to grow a garden in a parking lot!). But the goal is this: To create a space where one can learn how to urban garden and have fun doing it!
Urban gardening is fun and our urban gardening space–the Girl Sprouts Garden!– is conveniently located at the Girl Scouts of Southern AZ council office. You can learn and hang out with friends all at the same time. We’re of having all kinds of different activities where you learn about native planting and succulents, enjoy the rock garden, or help paint our hop-scotch path. There will be a shaded work/party space and eventually some pretty cool structures : everything from recycled palates to a painted hopscotch to a vegetable promenade to a Three Sisters cultural heritage garden. Come help the Girl Scout Council start their urban gardening demo garden and make Girl Sprouts Garden “THE” place to be!
Along with our work to create a healthy urban garden, we want to help you to be healthy urban dwellers! Following our gardening, we will be going on a short bike parade to explore the local neighborhood and have a cool treat at a nearby park (we’ll stay on safe neighborhood streets, so we won’t have to worry about too much car traffic!). If you bike to our GYSD Girl Sprouts Garden or if you bring your bike along so that you can participate in our celebratory bike parade, we’ll have an extra special token of appreciation for you. So bring your bike (and your helmet–this is mandatory!!), explore a new part of Tucson, and receive a special treat for helping yourself and others stay active and outdoors!
We can’t wait to see all of you for an incredible day of working on our Girl Sprouts Garden, going on a mini-urban exploration, and having lots of fun all around!
