ABSOLUTELY!! Just submitted the United Health Heroes grant application. If we get it, we will use the money to educate about childhood obesity and how to fight it… on a bike! Throughout the Semester of Service, the girls will learn about healthy eating and exercise while training and getting in shape for a Girl Scout style Tour de Tucson and Bike Rodeo! We will hold bicycle drives around town and purchase more bikes with the grant money. Bikes will go to families who can't afford them, children who need them and will also be used to implement a Bike Sharing program I've been wanting to get off the ground for a while now! The Bike Sharing
would start off small- probably be limited to Girl Scouts for a while. So, girls and troops could check out the bikes from the council office and use them for mountain biking, biking around the city, getting to and from school and getting fit! All the while, we will be educating about how riding a bike saves your lungs from nasty fumes that are produced by cars, saving our kids, our community and our planet! I am soooo Excited! We are also working on building a stationary bike that you can plug into small appliances… can you imagine powering your washing machine by just pedaling? Or charging your laptops and cell phones? How amazing would that be?!
